Studio Sales Pottery and studio owner Mike Carroll are pleased to announce the first installment of a multi-part series of programs highlighting the native clay of the Genesee River Valley: from its Indigenous origins to its early colonial uses. This project will continue throughout 2026 with additional programming, including harvesting and processing native clay, creating a body of original work, and firing the work on site at Studio Sales Pottery.
The programming will begin with a two-part lecture on the historical uses of the region’s clay:
Renowned Onondaga artist and potter Peter B. Jones will provide an overview of Indigenous clay use, including traditional Haudenosaunee pit-firing and coil-building techniques.
Master Potter at the Genesee Country Village & Museum, Mark Presher, will present on pottery making from the late 18th century through the mid-19th century, with a focus on salt-glazed pottery and the transition into the Industrial Revolution.
This programming is made possible through funding from the Aid to Localities Program via the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts and the New York State Senate.
Please join us for this free event on Sat., Feb. 14th from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Town of Avon, Opera Block, 3rd floor, 23 Genesee St., Avon.
